Nature vs. Nurture Process 1

For this A/W 19 collection, I am focusing on the brand Free People. Aesthetically, Free People is spirited, bohemian and feminine. They cater to the contemporary market.

My inspiration, nature vs. nurture, is based upon the debate of personality features either coming from hereditary or environmental factors. Scientists have found conflicting answers to this debate, and they have concluded that both factors have an impact on an individual’s personality. The structured feeling of genetic science (nature) will inspire geometric elements and lacing details. The malleability of environmental factors (nurture) will be represented in free-flowing motifs and silhouettes.

Key details of this collection include various prints and lacing details. Lacing will be used aesthetically and for closures. The samples I have created show different sizes of ribbon for closures, and the second iteration hopes to convey the twisting of a gene.

To bring something fresh to the Free People brand, I will be experimenting heavily with prints. I will be mixing different prints together for a maximalist effect. Also, I will do iterations of engineered prints and large-scale prints.

Additionally, to add something new to the Free People brand, I will be experimenting with the labels inside of the clothes to appeal more to customer’s growing interests in sustainability. Either printed inside of the garment itself, on a traditional label, or as a QR code, the story of the garment's history will be told and different care options will be communicated to consumers.
